There are plenty combinations of words in the English language that bring immediate pictures to one’s mind; summer day, juicy burger, beach vacation. The list goes on and on. Well, here at OPEN M we have another one to add to that list, Mountain of Food.
We’ve all seen people lining up in the wee-hours of the morning to get the latest iPhone or outside of Best Buy on Black Friday morning to get the giant TV for $59.95. Can you imagine a need so great that you line up before daybreak, not to get the latest smart phone or Black Friday deal, but to get food to feed your family? That’s exactly what happens at Mountain of Food. Before the sun rises, the line has formed.
There are so many ways in which OPEN M gives back to our community, but our monthly Mountain of Food distribution is absolutely one of the most impressive. OPEN M is one of three distribution site for this program in Summit County, which is provided by the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. We were also the first distribution site when the program was initiated.
The scale of this distribution is simply something magnificent to see. Before dawn, a semi-truck from the Akron-Canton Foodbank rolls into our parking lot, teeming with the food for that day’s giveaway. On this day our truck was loaded with 18,000lbs of produce, milk, breads and other basic food staples.
That is 9 TONS of food.
Nearly 80lbs per family in need. Given to people who don’t have enough food of their own to support their families.
Between 35-40 OPEN M staff and volunteers gather in the multi-purpose room and repack all the food into individual bags to be distributed to those who have been lined up outside the building since before the sun rose just so they are sure to get what they need. Today there were 230 families waiting to receive their share of that food.
Waiting inside were bags of fresh apples, peaches, squash, zucchini, lettuce, watermelons, potatoes, corn, cases of almond milk and literal tons of other grocery items. And quite possibly one of the most amazing things about the Mountain of Food is that when the distribution time is over, there is not a piece of food left remaining.
If you want to know more or would like to volunteer to help us with next month’s Mountain of Food just give us a call at 330-434-0110 and ask for Julie or dial her extension, 416. She would love to hear from you.
