Our Story
BEYOND THE LITTLE HOUSE
For more than 50 years, OPEN M’s ministry of faith, health, and hope has been helping meet the needs of residents living in Akron and Summit County. Opportunity Parish Ecumenical Neighborhood Ministry (OPEN M) was formed in 1968 - a time of poverty, crime, civil unrest.
Amidst those struggles, four churches came together to establish a ministry within a house on Princeton Street in one of Akron’s hardest-hit neighborhoods and began ministering to people in backyards and on front porches. These early efforts set the stage for a nonprofit with heart that would always be run by and for the people of greater Akron.
Today, OPEN M operates from its spacious multi-purpose facility on Princeton Street. OPEN M assists more than 67,000 individuals annually with the support of many volunteers and additional covenant partners, churches, and supporting organizations. We offer three core services including, Food Services, Health Services and Employment Services and many programs within each department.
While OPEN M’s core purpose remains the same — to feed the hungry, care for the sick, and strengthen the community — its scope of services is ever-adapting.
