Becky Umbach began volunteering at OPEN M in 2018 and in 2020 she became the head volunteer of the “Lettuce Give Thanks” Community Garden. Becky was crucial in the planning, development and execution of the community garden that provides fresh produce to the Food Services programs throughout the summer months.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with the community garden program, especially when I can share my garden knowledge with others,” said Umbach.

Becky was born in Maryland just outside of Washington D.C. as the oldest of four children. At eight years old, her family moved to Taiwan where she lived for five years before traveling extensively all over the world.

Throughout her adult life, Becky worked in the medical field until her retirement almost ten years ago. She has one daughter and son-in-law living in Chicago, IL and one son, daughter-in law, and an awesome two year old grand-daughter living in Beachwood, OH. In her free time, Becky enjoys  quilting, cooking, gardening, creating items by reusing or repurposing things, reading about historical figures, being a companion to seniors and volunteering.

We asked Becky a few questions about volunteering at OPEN M and here is what she said:

Why is it important for you to volunteer here?

I have been very blessed. I often think, "But for the grace of God go I."  Volunteering at OPEN M provides opportunities to share with others.

Can you tell us about a time that was especially meaningful for you as a volunteer?

A mom dropped her two teenage daughters off to work in the garden. It was clear that they wanted to be anywhere else besides the garden. They ended up enjoying themselves so much that they asked to return the next day and even wanted to bring a friend.

What have you learned about yourself and/or others through volunteering here?

In addition to food, shelter, and good health, I've learned how essential a person's self esteem is to their well being. The OPEN M staff and volunteers strive to make people feel valued.

What has been the biggest surprise about volunteering at OPEN M?

It has been refreshing to see the degree of respect and genuine concern shown for the people coming to OPEN M for help.
